Celebrating Manx transport

Kids have Thomas the Tank Engine and his imaginary Island of Sodor in the Irish Sea. For grown-up railfans, there’s the real-life Isle of Man:

As this video by YouTube user coasttvscotland shows, the picturesque Irish Sea island — a self-governing Crown dependency between Great Britain and Ireland — continues to be served by century-old interurban trams that recall the glory days of electric traction. Throw in vintage steam railways and the seasonal seaside horse trams in the capital city of Douglas, and it’s easy to see why the island is such a draw for railfans from around the world.

Mann’s historic transportation network will be celebrated this month with the annual Manx Heritage Transport Festival, from July 28 to Aug. 1. For more information on the festival and on IOM transportation services, click here. For good measure, the festival also has a Facebook fan page.
